Federal research funds
Through the Small Business Innovation Research Program, federal agencies set aside a portion of their R&D budget for U.S. companies with fewer than 500 employees. Each participating agency releases research topics and companies submit proposals through a competitive process. Companies can receive up to $100,000 for a six-month, Phase I project, and up to $750,000 for a two-year, Phase II project.
Research assistance for Kansas companies
These two programs help Kansas companies perform applied research that leads to commercialization:
- Centers of excellence
These are university-based research centers. Each has its own technology specialization. The five centers conduct applied research and collaborate with companies. The Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation helps fund these centers. Two centers of excellence are located at KU.
- R&D voucher program
This provides incentives for bioscience companies or entrepreneurs to do business in Kansas, by providing them with vouchers to undertake bioscience research and development activities with major research unversities institutions such as KU. The Kansas Bioscience Authority administers the program.
