Research for industry collaboration

The University of Kansas (KU) is a comprehensive research university, one of only 34 public universities belonging to the Association of American Universities. KU performs basic and applied research at two locations: the main campus in Lawrence and the Medical Center, located 40 minutes east in Kansas City.
In 2006, total KU research and development expenditures were $292 million.

Following are research areas that represent recent KU - industry collaboration:

Biosciences

  • Drug discovery – clinical trials pipeline that combines the resources of KU’s pharmaceutical research, medical school, and teaching hospital
  • Drug formulation and delivery platforms for various compounds.
  • Bioengineering applications for human joints, bones, and tissues and development of biosensors.
  • Assessment tools for human development and learning.

Information and Telecommunications Technologies

  • Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) and antenna design.  
  • Fiber optic and wireless networks.
  • Radar and remote sensing.
  • Data mining, bioinformatics, cluster computing, and machine learning.

Aviation

  • Uninhabited aerial vehicles.
  • Adaptive wing technology.
  • Flight management systems for general aviation aircraft.

Energy Biofuels, and Chemistry

  • Conversion of biomass into biofuels. 
  • Petroleum recovery in oil fields.
  • Catalyst and reactor applications.
