Examples of collaborative research projects:
Evaluation of Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) technologies

A large, global manufacturer needed to better track large numbers of various metal containers. The contents are quite diverse and the containers are shipped to thousand of customers throughout the world. The company was familiar with off-the-shelf RFID systems and was evaluating development of a new RFID tag that would be attached to their containers. However, the company did not have internal expertise to fully evaluate the technology and contacted KU during the summer of 2006 for possible collaboration.

The Information Technologies and Telecommunications Technologies Center at KU is home to the RFID Alliance Lab. Through this Lab, a KU team consisting of faculty and students initiated a six-month project with the company to help evaluate and test selected RFID systems, as well as design and test new antennas. The KU team provided answers as well as insight into the performance of the technology.

The KU research demonstrated performance limitations of the selected RFID systems and validated the company's concerns. The company chose not to pursue further development of the selected RFID systems, but has had ongoing discussions with KU for possible follow-through research.
