Examples of collaborative research projects:
Stabilization Analysis of New Antibody Drug

blue circuits

Biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies need to generate more drug candidates for commercialization while reducing time and costs associated with the development pipeline. Drug stabilization, formulation, and delivery are key aspects to the overall drug development process. The University of Kansas is a research leader in these areas.

In 2005, a medium-sized biopharmaceutical company initiated a research project with faculty and researchers in the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department. The company was developing a new antibody that presented major stabilization issues. The company did not have the internal expertise or resources to perform the necessary stabilization studies.

Through the Lab for Macromolecular and Vaccine Stabilization, the KU team of faculty, staff, and students worked with the company and performed research to better understand the behavior of the antibody and identified particular molecules that could be used to stabilize it.

The company and KU team have extended the initial project into a multi-year project. The research is helping the company more quickly evaluate further development of the antibody.
