One of the benefits of having robust, basic and applied research at KU is the potential for generating new intellectual property in the form of unique and novel inventions.
At KU, the Office of Technology Transfer & Intellectual Property (OTTIP) manages KU's intellectual property. OTTIP facilitates the transfer of technology by assisting KU researchers with intellectual property protection and commercialization, maintaining entrepreneurial and industry resources, and summarizing technology transfer activity for statistical and outreach purposes.
If an invention is created during a company-KU collaborative research project, the intellectual property framework is as follows:
- Inventions created solely by the company are owned solely by the company.
- Inventions created solely by KU are owned solely by KU.
- Inventions created jointly by the company and KU are owned jointly by the company and KU.
Companies interested in a more detailed description of KU's intellectual property polices, or who want to review KU technologies available for licensing, are encouraged to visit the Office of Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property web site.
