Collaborative research at KU typically involves one or more companies working together with one or more KU researchers on a technical research project. The parties collaborate to define a scope of work, timeline, necessary resources, and deliverables.
Projects cover a wide scope of interests and disciplines. Most projects are focused on technical areas, such as:
- Sample testing and analysis
- Problem solving
- Process improvement
- Proof-of-concept/prototype development
- Product improvement
- New technology development
Relationships
The relationship between a KU researcher and a company is crucial to the success of each project. Many projects lead to personal and long-term relationships between companies and KU researchers.
KU's role
Each project has a KU principal investigator who's responsible for managing KU's role in performing the research. This person decides who at KU works on the project and what resources will be needed. This may include multiple faculty, staff researchers, and students.
Scope of work
The scope of work is developed jointly by the company and the KU researcher. Projects can be very short, multi-phased, or very broad-based. Project duration can vary from a few months to a few years. The budget can range from a few thousand to a few hundred thousand dollars.
Agreements
The type and scope of research helps determine the agreements used to define the project, as well as protect, intellectual property, publication rights and confidentiality. For a better understanding of these agreements, please refer to the Doing Business with KU: A Guide for Industry page on the Technology Transfer web site.
